Pair of pewter chalices

£950.00

An unusual matched pair of late 18th c. Scottish pewter chalice shaped wine vessels; the stem of one is inverted.

One identical in form to that illustrated in Old Pewter Its Makers and Marks by Howard H. Cotterell, p.99, Pl.XXXI , Fig.a  9” high.  There is an ancient repair where the stem meets the bowl.

Good Pewter has a lustre of its own and is generally accepted to be best preserved and cared for by handling, being ‘hand cleaned’. Wash in warm soapy water, dust only with a soft brush or cloth and avoid any abrasive cleaner.

Some Pewter may be brittle, so it is best left dented rather than any attempt to ‘bend back’.
