A fine and rare Regency period Chinoiserie papier-mache tray

£18,500.00

Depicting potters and carriers at a kiln in a wooded out crop Chinoiserie decoration on papier-mâche of this period is usually associated with the exotic style of the Brighton Pavilion, making English depictions of Chinese industry extremely rare especially on such a luxury item.  Even more intriguing is the allusion to the ceramics trade on a tea tray, while clearly showing an English decorator’s ideas of Chinese faces and workers’ costume in contrast to the use of gold leaf and gold powder.
